[Session #18] Teaching Haiti in the Era of Black Lives Matter: Lessons from an intermediate language class
Monday July 8, 2024 1:00pm - 2:00pm PDT
In this interactive presentation, I will discuss a new unit I designed on Haiti for an intermediate French class. Inspired by Cécile Accilien, a Haitian scholar, and the socially engaged Haitian musicians, Boukman Eksperyans, I created a student-centered unit on Haiti’s remarkable story of resistance and revolution. Students were able to make connections between the legacy of colonialism and slavery, and the persistent problems of racism in the U.S. and France, while developing listening, reading, writing and comprehension skills.

[Session #19] Abolitionist and Liberationist Language Pedagogies
Tuesday July 9, 2024 12:30pm - 1:30pm PDT
Abolitionist and liberationist pedagogies invite us to imagine schools as places where historically (and presently) marginalized students experience empowerment, liberation, and joy as integral components of their schooling. This session will highlight how language education is uniquely situated to enact such pedagogies. We will explore frameworks and instructional practices that challenge linguistic oppression and that disrupt dominant language ideologies, curricular frameworks, and instructional practices. Specific examples will demonstrate how these pedagogies can be aligned to the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages and the ACTFL-NCSSFL Can-Do Statements to promote language proficiency goals across a variety of levels.

[Session #86] Enseigner Alain Mabanckou: Approches plurielles
Wednesday July 10, 2024 9:45am - 10:45am PDT
